Love is Enough
Or, the Freeing of Pharamond, a Morality
By William Morris · 2018
Back to CataloguePublished in 1872, this verse drama is subtitled a morality. An emperor and empress watch, and comment upon, the story of King Pharamond, who sees a woman in a vision, lays down his crown, and wanders in poverty until he finds Azalais living among country people. Meanwhile Honorius governs the abandoned kingdom, and a pair of rustic lovers echo the royal quest in a lower key. Songs and pageant scenes interrupt the spoken verse. The action is set in an invented medieval world rather than in a documented reign. The work is a staged allegory about whether love outweighs rule, not a historical chronicle.
