This collection brings together six of Turgenev's shorter works from the nineteenth century. A superfluous man writes a last account of a life without place; a deaf serf is forced to drown the dog that is his only companion; a boy at a spa falls in love with a girl who belongs to his father's hidden life; a shy meeting in the country fails through silence; a steppe patriarch divides land among sons with Lear-like results; a Renaissance novella follows a love-philtre that binds two men to one woman. The pieces are domestic and fantastic by turns, set on Russian estates and in Italy, and they treat attachment as something that arrives too late or at a deadly cost.
