First published in 1963 as Troy and the Trojans, this archaeological survey describes the mound of Hisarlik on the Dardanelles and the nine superimposed settlements excavated there. Blegen reviews earlier digging by Schliemann and Dorpfeld, then reports the University of Cincinnati campaign of the 1930s, which subdivided the main layers and dated them by pottery. He reconstructs walls, houses, and cemeteries from the Early Bronze Age through the late city that burned near 1200 BC, and he weighs that destruction against the Homeric story of a Greek siege. The book is a site history for general readers, not a verse retelling of the Iliad.
