Published in 1869, this historical romance is narrated by John Ridd, a yeoman farmer on Exmoor in the late seventeenth century. After his father is murdered by the Doones, a clan of outlaws who raid from a hidden valley, John grows up intent on strength rather than revenge. He meets Lorna, a girl raised among the Doones, and their attachment pulls him into the valley's feuds, into the aftermath of the Monmouth rebellion, and into a question about Lorna's true birth. The narrative mixes farm work, winter weather, family lawsuits, and violent raids. It is a regional novel of outlawry and marriage, not a court history of the Stuarts.
