First published in 1928, this is a collection of twelve short stories about Lord Peter Wimsey, the aristocratic amateur detective who also appears in Sayers's novels. The pieces send him into workshops, country houses, clubs, and medical settings where a corpse, a coded message, or a mechanical trick has to be read. Several stories turn on specialised knowledge - sculpture, campanology, heraldry, or the layout of a house - rather than on a police procedural. Bunter, the manservant, and Inspector Parker appear in support. The book is a set of independent puzzles, not one continuous case, and it shows Wimsey as a collector of odd facts as much as a sleuth.
