First published in 1900, this novel is told largely through Marlow about Jim, a young British officer who jumps from the pilgrim ship Patna when he believes it is sinking. An official inquiry ruins him; he drifts from berth to berth until he is sent to the remote settlement of Patusan, where he becomes Tuan Jim to the Bugis community and attaches himself to Jewel. The past returns in the form of a marauder who tests the honor Jim has tried to rebuild. The book is a study of guilt, reputation, and colonial exile, not a simple sea adventure.
