This selection gathers lyrics, verse tales, and extracts from the longer poems Byron wrote in the first decades of the nineteenth century. Short pieces address love, parting, political anger, and biblical subjects. Narrative poems set in the eastern Mediterranean follow outlaws, captives, and doomed attachments. Passages from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage track a restless traveller through Spain, Greece, and Italy; passages from Don Juan follow a young Spaniard through shipwreck, harems, and English drawing rooms in ottava rima. Occasional poems and satires sit beside more theatrical fragments. The volume is a cross-section of song, story, and mock-epic rather than a single narrative.
