Lord Byron and Some of His Contemporaries 1788-1824

By Lord Byron · 1988

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This compilation presents the life of George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824) through his own letters and journals and through the testimony of people who knew him. The sequence runs from his youth and the publication of Childe Harold, through fame, marriage, scandal, and exile in Switzerland and Italy, to the last expedition to Greece. Contemporaries such as his wife, sister, lovers, and fellow writers appear as witnesses. The book is a documentary portrait assembled in chronological order, not a critical study of the poems alone. It uses Byron's voice and those around him rather than a single modern biographer's argument.
