Long Walk to Freedom
The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela
By Nelson Mandela · 2021
Back to CatalogueThis autobiography follows Nelson Mandela from a rural Thembu childhood in the Transkei through education, the move to Johannesburg, and work as a lawyer, into the African National Congress and the campaign against apartheid. He recounts the Defiance Campaign, the turn to underground struggle, the Rivonia trial, and the long imprisonment on Robben Island and later at Pollsmoor and Victor Verster. The closing chapters cover negotiations with the government and his release. The book is a political life told in the first person, mixing private family history with the organisation of resistance. It is memoir, not a general history of South Africa by other hands.
