Published in 1868, this novel is set in Nuremberg, where Linda Tressel lives under the rule of her devout, severe aunt Charlotte Staubach. The aunt and the town clerk Peter Steinmarc, an older lodger in the house, intend that Linda shall marry Steinmarc. Linda is drawn instead to Ludovic Valcarm, a young man of radical politics and uncertain prospects. Church, civic respectability, and the girl's conscience become the field of struggle. Trollope treats religious tyranny and a forced match in a German Protestant city rather than his usual English county. The book is a short, grim courtship novel, not a Barsetshire chronicle.
