This novel is narrated by Piscine Molitor Patel, called Pi, a boy from Pondicherry whose family runs a zoo and practices several religions at once. When they emigrate, their ship sinks in the Pacific, and Pi survives in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The middle of the book is the long drift: hunger, weather, territorial rules between boy and animal, and encounters at sea. A frame has adults in Canada hearing the story afterward. The novel is an adventure and a tale about belief and storytelling, not a zoological case study.
