First issued in Vasari's Lives of the Artists and revised in 1568, this biography follows Michelangelo Buonarroti from his Florentine training through his service to Medici and papal patrons. Vasari recounts the early reliefs and the David, the tomb of Julius II, the Sistine ceiling and later Last Judgment, the Medici chapel, and the architectural work at St Peter's, along with stories of rivalry, terribilita, and the sculptor's habits of work. Anecdote and appraisal are mixed. The life is both a portrait of one artist and a demonstration of Vasari's idea of the peak of design. It is Renaissance art biography, not a catalogue raisonne.
