This selection from the correspondence of Horace Walpole, fourth Earl of Orford, runs through much of the eighteenth century. Writing from Strawberry Hill and London to friends such as Horace Mann, George Montagu, and others, he reports parliamentary politics, court gossip, foreign news, and the fashions and scandals of the town. He describes his gothic house and collections, comments on books, pictures, and the theatre, and records public events from Jacobite alarms to the American war. The letters are social history and self-portrait in instalments, not a formal autobiography. The volume is a reader's selection from a vast letter-book, arranged to show his range as an observer.
