Letters and Papers from Prison
The Enlarged Edition
By Dietrich Bonhoeffer · 2000
Back to CatalogueFirst collected in 1951, this volume gathers letters, notes, and fragmentary papers written by the German Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer after his arrest in 1943, mostly from Tegel military prison in Berlin. He writes to his parents, his friend Eberhard Bethge, and others about prison routine, reading, music, and family news, and he works at theological questions: a religionless Christianity, the coming of age of the modern world, and how faith might be lived without religious privilege. Poems, outlines for a book, and remarks on fellow prisoners sit beside the correspondence. The papers stop with his transfer toward the end of the war. The book is a prison dossier, not a finished systematic treatise.
