Synopsis
This volume collects talks from Cooke's weekly BBC radio series, begun in 1946, in which he explains American public life to a British audience. Typical letters take a news event, election, trial, or small-town custom and set it in a longer view of Congress, the presidency, race, money, and landscape. The voice is conversational, with asides on baseball, trains, and the difference between American and English usage. Pieces are independent broadcasts rather than chapters of one argument. The book is a selection of spoken essays, not a continuous history of the United States and not a private diary.
