Magnus Pym, a senior officer in British intelligence, disappears after a colleague's death, and the Service begins to take his life apart. In a seaside lodging he writes an account of that life for his son, returning again and again to Rick Pym, a charming confidence man whose frauds taught Magnus how to invent a self. A parallel strand follows Jack Brotherhood and others as they question Magnus's wife Mary and reconstruct his long friendship with Axel, a Czech who became his other handler. The novel is a study of the making of a double agent, told as family history as much as spy plot.
