First published in 1939, this study traces Leonardo da Vinci's development as a painter and draughtsman from his training in Florence through the Milanese years and later work in Florence, Milan, and France. Clark follows the movement of Leonardo's mind across paintings, drawings, and notebooks: problems of light, anatomy, geology, and the grouping of figures, and the long gestation of works such as the Last Supper and the portraits. He treats the Treatise on Painting and the notebooks as evidence of how Leonardo thought, not as a separate scientific career. The book is an account of an artist's growth, arranged chronologically, rather than a full private biography.
