This anthology gathers medieval narrative sources for the Germanic and Norse ring legends later associated with the Nibelungs and the Volsungs. One part draws on Scandinavian tradition: poems from the Poetic Edda, Snorri's prose account, and the Volsunga Saga, in which a cursed hoard, Sigurd, Brynhild, and the destruction of a kin-group are central. The other part draws on German tradition, above all the Nibelungenlied, with related later pieces on Siegfried. Typical matter includes the dragon, the Rhine treasure, broken oaths, and the fall of Burgundian princes. There is no single continuous plot. The book is a source-reader of the ring cycle, not a modern retelling or an opera libretto.
