This comic novel, published in 1923, sends the impecunious Psmith to Blandings Castle after he agrees, for a fee, to steal a diamond necklace belonging to Lady Constance. Posing as the poet Ralston McTodd, he enters Lord Emsworth's household, already vexed by the Efficient Baxter and a succession of impostors, and meets Eve Halliday, who has come to catalogue the library. Aunts, gardeners, and flower-pots complicate the theft and the courtship. The book is a country-house farce in which Psmith's courtesy and nerve rearrange other people's plots, including those of the persistent Freddie Threepwood.
