This medieval Icelandic saga, written in the thirteenth century, recounts the families of Laxardal in western Iceland over several generations. Its center is Gudrun Osvifsdottir, whose four marriages and whose love for Kjartan Olafsson shape a feud with Bolli Thorleiksson, Kjartan's foster-brother and cousin. Land, goading, and divided kinship turn a love triangle into killings that spread through the district. The narrative moves from the settlement age and a royal interlude in Norway to conversion-era Iceland, in a spare prose of feasts, journeys, and legal reckoning. It is a family saga about passion constrained by honor and property.
