This selection from Malory's fifteenth-century Arthurian cycle gathers the principal episodes of Lancelot's career and his love for Queen Guinevere. It follows Lancelot's arrival at Arthur's court, his prowess in war and tournament, the episode of Elaine of Corbenic and the birth of Galahad, and Lancelot's part in the Grail quest, then concentrates on the secrecy and exposure of the queen's adultery. The narrative is prose romance drawn from the Winchester text, modernized in spelling: a cut of Le Morte Darthur that treats the love affair as the hinge on which the fellowship of the Round Table will split.
