Issued in 1874, this novel concerns the legitimacy and marriage of Lady Anna Lovel. Her mother, Josephine, claims to have been the Earl's true wife; the new Earl and his party call Anna illegitimate and fight the case in court. Meanwhile Anna has grown up in poverty pledged to Daniel Thwaite, a tailor's radical son who supported the two women, while her mother and the lawyers press her to marry the young Earl and end the suit. The plot turns on whether a girl will keep a promise across class lines once a fortune and a title become available. It is a legal and domestic novel about rank and consent.
