A Pedestrian Journey Through Russia and Siberian Tartary
The Frozen Sea and Kamtchatka
By Captain John Dundas Cochrane · 1983
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1824, this travel narrative records Captain John Dundas Cochrane's attempt, beginning in 1820, to go round the world on foot by way of Russia, Siberia, and North America. He walks to St Petersburg, then, with Russian official help, uses horses, sledges, and canoes across Siberia to Okhotsk and Kamchatka. He describes towns, exiles, Indigenous peoples of the north-east, climate, and the limits of supply. In Kamchatka he marries and gives up the Pacific crossing, returning to Europe in 1823. The book is a journey log, not a systematic geography of the empire.
