First published in 1850, this historical novel is set in western France during the royalist rising of 1793. It follows the noble houses of de Lescure and Larochejaquelin, the peasant leader Cathelineau, and the republican officers sent to crush the revolt, as the Vendean armies take towns, lose them, and fall back toward the Loire. Private attachments - among them Henri de Larochejaquelin's love and the divided loyalties of families caught between Paris and the bocage - run beside battles and village massacres. The book is a military and domestic narrative of a civil war fought over dynasty, church, and conscription.
