This archaeological history of the palace site at Knossos on Crete follows the mound of Kephala from Neolithic settlement through the Old and New Palaces of the Minoan Bronze Age and the later Mycenaean occupation. Macdonald, writing as a field archaeologist, reconstructs the sequence of building, earthquake, and rebuilding; the central court, magazines, and frescoed rooms; and the evidence for storage, ritual, and administration, including the Linear A and Linear B records. He treats Arthur Evans's excavation and restorations as part of the site's modern story while returning to the stratified remains. The book is a guided account of one palatial center, not a general history of Crete.
