Klara and the Sun

By Kazuo Ishiguro · 2025

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This novel is narrated by Klara, an Artificial Friend displayed in a shop and then chosen as companion to Josie, a frail teenager living with her mother outside an American city. Klara studies human gestures in order to keep Josie well, and she comes to treat the Sun as a source of nourishment that might be bargained with. Around Josie are her friend Rick, who has not received the genetic lifting that shapes the children's school world, and adults who discuss a possible substitution should Josie fail. The book is a first-person study of service, observation, and what counts as a person in a stratified society.
