In 1202 Arthur de Caldicot, now a squire, joins the host gathering in Venice for the Fourth Crusade. Far from the Welsh Marches, he watches crusader politics turn toward the Christian city of Zara and toward Constantinople, and he measures the campaign against the stories he still sees in his seeing stone, where King Arthur's court is likewise riven by war, love, and broken oaths. His own prospects - knighthood, marriage, and the lordship of the Middle March - remain unsettled. This third novel of the Arthur trilogy interleaves a boy's coming of age with a grim historical crusade and the darker matter of the Arthurian cycle.
