This history play, printed in the 1623 Folio, follows King John's disputed hold on the English crown. John's claim is challenged by Arthur, son of John's elder brother, and by Philip of France, who backs the boy. The bastard Philip Faulconbridge, acknowledged as Richard Coeur de Lion's son, becomes John's most vigorous supporter. The action moves between France and England: a siege, a shifting papal interdict after John refuses Stephen Langton, Hubert's charge concerning Arthur, and the revolt of nobles who fear the king's methods. The play is a political drama about legitimacy, expediency, and a realm that cannot settle who should rule.
