First performed about 1613, this history play treats the later years of Henry VIII's reign as a sequence of rises and falls at court. Cardinal Wolsey engineers the fall of Buckingham and then overreaches in the matter of the king's divorce from Katherine of Aragon. The king turns toward Anne Boleyn; Katherine defends herself in a trial scene; Cranmer is protected against faction. Pageants, a coronation, and the christening of the infant Elizabeth punctuate the intrigue. Spectacle and trial scenes outweigh open battle. It is a court drama of marriage and ministry, not a full life of the king.
