This history play, first printed in 1598, opens after Henry Bolingbroke has taken the crown as Henry IV. The king faces rebellion from the Percys, led in the field by the young Hotspur, while his own son Prince Hal keeps company in Eastcheap with Sir John Falstaff and a crew of tavern thieves. The action moves between the council, the rebel camp, and the Boar's Head, and gathers toward the battle of Shrewsbury, where Hal must meet both Hotspur and his own reputation. The play is a political drama of a usurper's unsettled reign and a comedy of the prince's double life among drunkards and highwaymen.
