First published in 1924, this novel is set in Chandrapore under the British Raj. Adela Quested and the elder Mrs Moore arrive from England and try, through the Muslim doctor Aziz and the school superintendent Fielding, to see something of India beyond the civil station. An excursion to the Marabar Caves ends in accusation and arrest, and the case divides the Anglo-Indian club from the Indian town. Around that crisis Forster places club gossip, a Hindu household, and the question of whether personal friendship can exist inside an imperial hierarchy. The book is a social novel of misunderstanding.
