This novel opens in 1976 California, where Dana, a Black writer, is repeatedly pulled back in time to a Maryland plantation in the antebellum South. She is summoned whenever her white ancestor Rufus Weylin, son of the slaveholder Tom Weylin, is in mortal danger; her survival, and the existence of her family line, depend on keeping him alive. On the plantation she lives as a slave, forms a bond with Alice, and must manage Rufus as he grows from a frightened child into a master. The book is a time-travel narrative about kinship, coercion, and the daily bargains required to endure slavery.
