First published in 1901, this novel follows Kimball O'Hara, an orphaned Irish boy raised in the bazaars of Lahore, who attaches himself to Teshoo Lama, a Tibetan monk seeking a sacred river. Kim's street knowledge of languages and disguises draws the attention of Mahbub Ali and of Colonel Creighton, who recruit him into the Great Game, the intelligence contest between Britain and Russia on India's northern approaches. Sent to school yet still traveling with the lama, Kim learns to serve as a chain-man and spy while remaining the lama's chela. The book is both a road narrative across British India and a study of divided loyalty.
