Synopsis

This first Jack Reacher novel opens when the ex-military policeman is arrested for murder within an hour of stepping off a bus in Margrave, Georgia. Reacher, drifting since leaving the army, finds that the dead man is his brother Joe, a Treasury investigator. With a local detective he digs into a town that looks prosperous and orderly while hiding a large criminal operation tied to counterfeiting and to the killing of anyone who asks questions. The plot is a procedural thriller: Reacher uses interrogation, surveillance, and force to map the conspiracy and to decide what he owes the brother he had not seen in years.
