Kidnapped: Being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751
How He Was Kidnapped and Cast Away; His Sufferings in a Desert Isle; His Journey in the West Highlands; His Acquaintance with Alan Breck Stewart and Other Notorious Highland Jacobites; with All That He Suffered at the Hands of His Uncle
By Robert Louis Stevenson · 2006
Back to CataloguePresented as the memoirs of David Balfour in 1751, this novel, first issued in 1886, sends the orphaned heir from Cramond to his uncle's grim house, then onto a slaving brig meant to be rid of him. After the Covenant picks up Alan Breck, a fight with the crew and a wreck on Mull throw the pair into the Appin country, where they are hunted after the shooting of the Red Fox. Their flight across heather, bothies, and clannish loyalties tests David's Whig upbringing against Alan's Jacobite code. The book is a Scottish historical adventure in the first person, not a sequel to Treasure Island.
