Synopsis
First published in 1886, this adventure novel follows David Balfour, a Lowland youth who, after his father's death, seeks his inheritance from his uncle Ebenezer at the House of Shaws. Ebenezer has him kidnapped aboard the brig Covenant. A collision at sea brings aboard the Jacobite Alan Breck Stewart. David and Alan survive wreck on the west coast, become entangled in the Appin killing of Colin Campbell, and flee through the Highlands. The book is a first-person memoir of 1751, treating Whig and Jacobite Scotland, not a children's pirate tale.
