This novel follows two journeys that gradually approach each other. Fifteen-year-old Kafka Tamura runs away from his father's house in Tokyo to Takamatsu, takes shelter in a private library kept by the clerk Oshima, and is drawn to the older Miss Saeki and to a dark prophecy about his parents. In a parallel strand, the elderly Nakata, who lost ordinary speech after a wartime incident and can talk to cats, is pulled into a violent errand involving a figure called Johnnie Walker, then travels west with the truck driver Hoshino. Talking cats, entrance stones, and a metaphysical forest bind the two plots into one uncanny narrative.
