First published in 1955, this narrative reconstructs the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 14-15 April 1912 from survivor testimony, wireless logs, and inquiry records. Lord follows the collision with the iceberg, the loading of boats, the band, the wireless room, and the arrival of the Carpathia, cutting among passengers and crew in first class, steerage, and the engine spaces. Individual names and small decisions carry the account rather than a single hero. The book is a documentary reconstruction of one night, not a novel and not a technical history of shipbuilding.
