First published in 1895, this Wessex novel follows Jude Fawley, a village stonemason who teaches himself Latin and Greek in hope of entering the university town of Christminster. A hasty marriage to Arabella, a barmaid who soon leaves him, blocks that plan. He later meets his cousin Sue Bridehead, whose quick mind and distrust of conventional marriage draw him into a partnership that village and church treat as scandal. The plot moves through workyards, lodging houses, and failed applications, as poverty, sexual choice, and the closed door of the colleges close in. It is a study of class, learning, and the damage done by marriages that cannot be decently undone.
