Published in 1968, this walking book records Hillaby's trek the length of Britain from Land's End to John o' Groats. He travels mostly on foot, sleeping in inns, barns, and the open, and he notes geology, plants, industrial ruins, new roads, and the people who give him directions or a bed. The route is a continuous northward line rather than a set of day trips, and the voice is that of a naturalist-reporter testing how much of the island can still be crossed without a car. The book is a single journey's log, not a guidebook of recommended sights.
