Written in the 1750s and first printed in 1966, this is the journal of a British officer who sailed to India as secretary to Colonel John Adlercron of the 39th Foot. Corneille describes the voyage, service in the Madras presidency, travel in the south, and the Bengal campaign that includes the battle of Plassey in 1757. He records climate, cantonments, logistics, and the look of the country as a soldier on someone else's staff rather than as a governor. The book is a mid-eighteenth-century military diary, a primary account of Company warfare, not a later imperial history.
