In an England still fighting Napoleon, magic has dwindled to footnotes until the reclusive Yorkshire gentleman Mr Norrell proves that practical English magic can be restored. He goes to London, serves the government, and takes as pupil Jonathan Strange, a gifted and impulsive younger magician. Their partnership frays over method, publicity, and Strange's dealings with a fairy gentleman whose help has a price. Footnotes invent a whole secondary literature of spells, mad kings, and lost Raven King lore. The novel is a long alternate history of two careers, a marriage, and the return of magic to public life.
