This history sets Joan of Arc inside the civil and dynastic war that followed Agincourt, rather than beginning with the Maid as an isolated prodigy. Castor first maps the split between Armagnac and Burgundian France, English occupation, and the doubtful claim of the dauphin Charles. Only then does she follow the peasant who hears voices, wins backing, relieves Orleans, sees Charles crowned at Reims, and is captured, tried for heresy, and burned at Rouen in 1431. Later chapters cover the nullification of the sentence and the afterlife of the case. The book is a political narrative of fifteenth-century France with Joan as its later centre.
