Engraved from 1804 onward, this is Blake's longest illuminated prophetic poem. Albion, the giant who is both Britain and fallen Man, has sunk into sleep and division; Jerusalem, his emanation, is separated from him and wanders. Los the prophetic smith labors at the furnaces in London, building Golgonooza against the Spectre and the daughters of Albion. English counties, gates, and streets become a spiritual map of error and possible awakening. The work mixes vision, argument, and plate design. It is a prophetic epic of a nation's fall and potential restoration, not a guidebook to the earthly city.
