This volume pairs two Yorkshire novels of 1847. In Jane Eyre, an orphaned governess at Thornfield Hall is drawn to her employer, Rochester, while a hidden life in the house blocks an ordinary marriage and forces her to choose work and conscience over dependence. In Wuthering Heights, the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw form a childhood bond that marriage to Edgar Linton cannot settle; revenge then passes through a second generation on two neighbouring houses, told by a housekeeper and a tenant. Together the books are studies of passion, class, and household power on the northern moors and in a gentleman's isolated hall.
