This volume collects Austen's six completed novels of English gentry life, first published between 1811 and 1818: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Each follows young women whose prospects turn on marriage, money, and the judgement of a small neighbourhood - country houses, Bath, and village visiting rather than public history. Recurring pressures are entail, entailment of feeling, parental folly, and the gap between charm and character. The book is a set of independent courtship comedies and moral studies, not a single continuous story or a biographical sampler of the author's life.
