In the Maine town of Derry, children begin to disappear, and a shape-shifting predator that often appears as a clown named Pennywise feeds on their fear. Seven misfits - among them a stuttering boy, a girl marked by abuse, and a child with asthma - find one another, learn what hunts them, and fight it in the town's sewers and waste lots. Decades later, as adults living elsewhere, they are called back when the killings resume, bound by a childhood oath they barely remember. The novel alternates the two times, mapping Derry's history of violence against the private histories of the seven. It is a horror story about memory, friendship, and a place that will not stay buried.
