First published in 1904 as Gods and Fighting Men, this is Lady Gregory's English retelling of two Irish myth cycles, drawn from manuscripts and from oral storytellers. The first part follows the Tuatha De Danaan: their coming to Ireland, the deeds of Manannan and Lugh, and the fate of the Children of Lir. The second follows Finn Mac Cumhaill, the Fianna, Oisin, and the pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne. Gregory writes in a spoken, slightly archaic prose meant to carry the cadence of the Irish originals. The book is a continuous legendary history of gods and warriors, not a random sheaf of village fairy tales.
