This single-volume history of the Indian subcontinent runs from the Indus valley cities of the Bronze Age to the modern states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Keay follows the pattern of inward invasion and regional kingdom: Vedic society, the Mauryan and Gupta empires, the coming of Islam, the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals, European trading companies, and the British Raj. He treats religion, caste, and culture as part of the political story rather than as a separate appendix, and he gives space to the south and to frontier regions as well as to the Gangetic plain. Partition and the successor states close the narrative. It is a general history, not a biography of nationalist leaders.
