First privately printed in 1927, this novel is set in a mythic prehistory when gods still walk among mortals and satyrs linger in remote valleys. A goddess takes as her lover a being she believes to be a man; the affair produces a daughter who is abandoned, raised among humans, and later drawn into the founding of a kingdom. The demigod Linus, a civilising figure, imposes law, cities, and a new moral order on a world that had not yet divided good from evil. The book is a pagan creation-and-civilisation fable, written as narrative romance rather than as anthropology or as a retelling of Genesis chapter by chapter.
